My Name is Khan Review!

Ok so....we waited....and waited....and waited.... and FINALLY it released... My Name is Khan- a Autistic man, a single-mother Hairdresser, one bitter brother, his angelic wife, a tradgedy, a hurricane, Mama Jenny, Funny hair Jo-el, two presidents, one message.... My Name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist... it sounds good in writing, but did it live up on the big screen?... YES IT DID!! My Name is Khan is fantastic; there are no two ways about it. Shah Rukh Khan proves that his versatility as an actor is not limited to the typical slushy, romantic roles as he takes up the challenge of playing a man faced with difficulties in every aspect of his life and does so convincingly. It truly was Rizvan Khan I was watching and not the superstar who sat three metres away from me just last week. Kajol took on the role of Madira beautifully and in one scene of immense pain and sorrow where she is faced with the loss of a loved one she proved just how talented she is by using nothing but facial expressions to show us the level of her anguish. It must be mentioned that the performances are supported by an amazing background score as well some memorable songs proving that Shanker-Ehsan-Loy are back on form with My Name is Khan. A personal favourite is Sajda which is picturised beautifully due to the supremely talented cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran who gives us some absolutely stunning shots of America throughout the film. The pace of the film is the only factor which prevents me from giving the film full marks. The first half flows perfectly with moments of romance, comedy, sorrow and happiness being captured perfectly. However, the post interval part of the film starts to drag slightly; especially after Rizvan contacts the FBI from a phone booth after an impacting speech regarding a story from the Quran. It seems that Karan Johar tries to cover every part of the narrative thoroughly which ends up compromising comfort for the audiences. This taken into account, however, My Name is Khan still proves to be the best of 2010 yet and arguably the best work of both Karan Johar & Shah Rukh Khan. ****1/2 Haroon Rashid
