South Asian Modelling Industry UK - Bad South Asian Models
Interacting with everyone from newcomers to big A-list stars and being involved with high profile events around the world has enabled me to get a unique perspective on all areas of South Asian media. In a series of honest commentary pieces, I hope to share some of my experiences and give you the inside view on all areas of media world that can be glamorous, inspiring, disappointing, heartbreaking, crooked, brilliant and filled with talent. (Before you continue reading, please note that these pieces may cause offence in some corners – this is not my intention! The aim is to educate people, especially those who are starting off on their journeys.) I will be starting off with bad South Asian Models
Not So Model Behaviour
These days everyone is a model! Despite not being good looking enough or even professional enough to pursue a career in the industry, there are countless individuals who either live in a false reality or set themselves up for heartbreak and a financially expensive life lesson. Many times these individuals are not to blame because their ‘close’ friends haven’t been totally honest with them. By remaining quiet, they leave their so called friends open to ridicule and at the mercy of sharks who are only interesting in selling them an expensive portfolio and false hopes. If you, like me have thought, ‘how the hell is this person a model’ blame their friends for not being honest with them. I know I do! By living in a false reality, these poor individuals, some of whom should be old enough to know better, are being laughed at and giving the industry a bad name.
Then you have very good-looking girls who develop an attitude and think they are Kate Moss after one free photo-shoot. Instead of working hard to achieve success, they are happy to swan around like they are a supermodel and are happy to become advisors to other models, despite achieving very little themselves. You have other girls who think being good-looking is a passport to success and think its acceptable to flirt their way to jobs – these are the ones who will usually rob real talent of work.
Finally, you have hardworking models who try to make a good honest living. They will look after themselves, remain humble and work hard to achieve success. They will have real expectations, play on their strengths and give some semblance of credibility to a south Asian modelling industry that has been on the decline. The fact that these honest, beautiful people are tarnished or swallowed up the rubbish that has dirtied the industry is perhaps the reason why many South Asian publications and fashion shows use non-Asian models in desi clothes. It is also a reason why despite being some of the most beautiful people in the world, South Asians still fail to make it internationally. By using credibility as a torch, we can find the gems and help them shine.
